Our Work

Joint Events/Activities

The entire alumnae chapter supports Recruitment at Alpha Iota (UCLA), Beta Alpha (USC) and Zeta
Theta (Pepperdine) through volunteering, member recommendations, contributing donations,
attending Initiations, attending joint Founders Day programs, and serving as Advisors and International Officers. With this extensive support and concern for our collegians, in addition to the South Bay Alumnae Chapter absorbing local dues for members in the first year after graduation, the influx of young alumnae has enriched and expanded the horizons of our chapter.

Financial Support

The South Bay Alumnae Chapter also donates $300 annually to each of the three collegiate chapters to enhance their individual programming.

The South Bay Alumnae Chapter is actively involved in fundraising with South Bay Alumnae Panhellenic Association, which awardeds scholarships to high school students. to attend Northwestern University to earn her MBA! The South Bay Panhellenic fundraiser has distributed more than $200,000 in scholarships in the past 50 years.  Two Beta Alpha members have received Scholarships in the past biennium to continue their Law School education. Chapter member Carly Verble served as our South Bay Panhellenic delegate.

Founder's Day
Every even year, the Southern California Intercity Alumnae Council sponsors a regional  Founders Day celebration.  In November 2006, over 600 collegians and alumnae attended this event, representing 11 collegiate and 14 alumnae chapters. Twelve 50-year members from the South Bay Alumnae Chapter were recognized for their extraordinary commitment to the organization. This event was co-chaired. The event was charied by our member, Linda Babcock.

Community Service
Community Service is a top priority of the members of South Bay Alumnae Chapter. Our members respond to community needs such as: Gamma Phi Beta initiated South Bay award winning Panhellenic programs addressing the needs of incoming freshmen collegiate women entitled “Rape 101”; provided a speaker for the Torrance Memorial Hospital “Women’s Heart Health Conference” attended by over 350 women and lauded for its innovation and outreach; a Designs for Dinning fundraiser chaired by one of our members and benefiting local families in need; and support to our military/veterans through participation in the local Elks Lodge fundraiser event.

Syracuse Triad
South Bay Alumnae has shown a great deal of pride and enthusiasm for their sorority affiliation by hosting the “Syracuse Triad”—a multi-sorority meeting of Alpha Phi, Alpha Gamma Delta, and Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae. This annual event celebrates our respective sorority foundings at Syracuse University.  In 2006, the Mayor of Palos Verdes Estates, California, a Gamma Phi Beta Alumna Initiate, hosted a presentation about the history of the South Bay Area. In 2008, the Syracuse Triad was a “Tea at Trumps” National Golf Course in Palos Verdes.  The Syracuse Triad meeting was established 25 years ago and continues to promote Panhellenic spiritn in the South Bay area.

About US

The South Bay Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta was chartered in 1956 with 15 founding members. Currently, the chapter has a roster of over 70 members from the greater Los Angeles area, and that number grows each year. Our members hail from all over the country and are alumnae representatives of over 25 different collegiate chapters. We are proud of our sisters L’Cena Rice, past Gamma Phi Beta Foundation Chairwoman and past Gamma Phi Beta International President (two terms); and Linda Babcock, past Gamma Phi Beta International Officer and Region 7 Coordinator, who are both active members of our chapter. Many of our members are, or have served as, Chapter Advisors, Advisory Board members, or House Corporation Board members.
